Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our psychiatric services, appointments, fees, and referrals.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
Yes. A valid GP referral is required before booking an appointment with our psychiatrists. The referral allows you to access Medicare rebates for your consultations. Your GP can send the referral via Medical-Objects, Argus, HealthLink, ReferralNet, fax, or email.
How long is a GP referral valid for?
A standard GP referral to a psychiatrist is valid for 12 months from the date it is written. After 12 months, you will need a new referral from your GP to continue seeing your psychiatrist with Medicare rebates.
What happens during the first appointment?
Your initial consultation is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment lasting approximately 45–60 minutes. Your psychiatrist will review your medical history, current symptoms, medications, and any previous treatment. Together, you will develop a personalised treatment plan.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Mindscape Psychiatry offers telehealth consultations via video call to patients across Australia. Telehealth appointments are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform and are eligible for the same Medicare rebates as in-person visits.
How much does an appointment cost?
Our fees vary by appointment type. Initial consultations, follow-up appointments, and medication reviews each have different fee structures. Medicare rebates apply to all appointment types with a valid GP referral. Visit our fees page for a full breakdown of costs and out-of-pocket expenses.
What is the out-of-pocket cost after the Medicare rebate?
The out-of-pocket cost depends on the type of appointment. Medicare covers a portion of the consultation fee, and the remainder is your gap payment. Please refer to our fees page for specific rebate amounts and gap costs for each appointment type.
What conditions do you treat?
Our psychiatrists treat a wide range of mental health conditions including ADHD, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder (BPD), OCD, PTSD, schizophrenia, eating disorders, addiction, and trauma-related conditions. View our full list of services.
Can I book an appointment online?
Yes. Once you have a valid GP referral, you can contact us to book your appointment by phone on 07 5588 5108, by email at info@mindscapepsychiatry.com.au, or through our booking page.
How do I cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Please contact us at least 24 hours before your appointment to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee. You can reach us by phone or email to make changes to your booking.
Do you prescribe medication?
Yes. Our psychiatrists are qualified medical doctors who can prescribe and manage psychiatric medications as part of your treatment plan. Medication management is tailored to your individual needs and reviewed regularly during follow-up appointments.
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed additional specialist training in mental health. Psychiatrists can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and provide medical treatments. A psychologist provides talk therapy and behavioural interventions but cannot prescribe medication. Both work together as part of a comprehensive mental health care team.
Do you treat children and adolescents?
Our practice primarily sees adult patients (18 years and over). For children and adolescents, we recommend speaking with your GP for a referral to a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
