What is Adult ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels, and impulse control. It begins in childhood, but many people are not assessed until adulthood — sometimes after a child of their own is diagnosed, or when the demands of study, work, or family life make long-standing difficulties harder to manage.
In adults, ADHD often looks different from the hyperactive child many people picture. Restlessness may be felt more internally, and the main challenges are often with organisation, time management, focus, and emotional regulation. An accurate assessment can help make sense of these experiences and guide the right support.
For assessments for young people, see our ADHD assessment for children & teens. For more about ADHD and its treatment, see our ADHD page.
Symptoms
Adults who seek an ADHD assessment often describe:
- Inattention: difficulty sustaining focus, losing track of tasks, forgetfulness, missing details, or being easily distracted.
- Disorganisation: difficulty planning, prioritising, meeting deadlines, or managing time.
- Restlessness: an inner sense of being "on the go", difficulty relaxing, or fidgeting.
- Impulsivity: acting or speaking before thinking, interrupting, or making hasty decisions.
- Emotional regulation: frustration, irritability, or feeling easily overwhelmed.
Everyone experiences some of these at times. ADHD is considered when the pattern is long-standing, began in childhood, is present across more than one area of life, and affects day-to-day functioning.
Why does Adult ADHD occur?
ADHD has a strong genetic and neurobiological basis and often runs in families. It is not caused by personal failings or a lack of effort. Understanding this can be an important part of making sense of past difficulties and moving forward with practical, evidence-based support.
Diagnosing Adult ADHD
A thorough adult ADHD assessment draws on information from more than one source. The process may include:
- Detailed clinical history: current difficulties and how they affect work, study, relationships, and daily life.
- Developmental history: evidence that symptoms were present in childhood — school reports or input from a parent or family member can help, with consent.
- Standardised rating scales: validated questionnaires completed by you and, where appropriate, a partner or family member.
- Consideration of other explanations: ADHD symptoms can overlap with anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, substance use, and autism, which are considered as part of the assessment.
ADHD assessments generally take place over a minimum of two sessions. You will be guided through what to expect beforehand.
Treatments for Adult ADHD
Support for adult ADHD is individualised and may combine several approaches:
- Education about ADHD and how it affects you.
- Practical strategies for organisation, time management, and focus at work, at study, and at home.
- Medication, where appropriate, considered carefully on an individual basis with regular review.
- Psychological support, such as therapy or coaching, coordinated with your GP.
- Assessment and management of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression, where present.
The right combination depends on your needs and is reviewed over time.
