How telehealth appointments work
- 1
Get a GP referral
Ask your GP for a referral to Mindscape Psychiatry. You or your GP can send it to us through our referrals page, by email or by fax.
- 2
We review your referral
Every referral is triaged. Once yours is accepted, we send you new patient paperwork and a link to book.
- 3
Join your video appointment
A text reminder and an email with your video link are sent the day before. Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment.
- 4
Ongoing care
Your psychiatrist discusses a management plan with you and updates your GP. Existing patients can book follow-ups online.

Telehealth psychiatry questions
Can I see a psychiatrist online in Australia?
Yes. Mindscape Psychiatry provides telehealth psychiatry by secure video call to patients across all Australian states and territories. In-person appointments are also available at our clinic in Marsden, Queensland.
Do I need a referral for a telehealth psychiatrist?
Yes. A valid referral from your GP or another medical practitioner is required, and it is also needed to claim a Medicare rebate. GP referrals to a specialist are generally valid for 12 months.
Can I claim Medicare for a telehealth psychiatry appointment?
Medicare rebates are available for eligible video consultations with a psychiatrist when you have a valid referral. Fees and rebates vary by appointment type — see our fees page for details.
Can a telehealth psychiatrist prescribe medication?
Yes, where clinically appropriate. Prescriptions are usually sent as an electronic prescription (eScript) — a QR code sent to your phone or email that you can take to any pharmacy. Some medicines, including stimulant medications for ADHD, are subject to additional state and territory regulations, and your psychiatrist will explain what applies to you. Prescription renewals are processed during appointment time.
What do I need for a telehealth appointment?
A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet, private space. We email your video link the day before your appointment.
Is telehealth suitable for everyone?
Telehealth suits most people, but not every situation. It is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, call 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14. If you would prefer to be seen in person, appointments are available at our Marsden clinic.
