What is Adult Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that influences how a person communicates, relates to others, and experiences the world around them. It is described as a "spectrum" because its presentation varies widely — every autistic person has their own profile of strengths and support needs.

Many autistic adults were not identified in childhood. Some seek an assessment after a family member is diagnosed, after years of feeling different from those around them, or when the demands of work, study, or relationships become harder to manage. Some adults have learned to mask or camouflage autistic traits, which can make them less visible to others but more tiring to sustain.

An assessment can offer a clearer understanding of yourself and help guide the right support. To learn more about autism in adults, see Autism (ASD) in Adults. For assessments for young people, see our autism assessment for children & teens.

Symptoms

Adults who seek an autism assessment often describe:

  • Differences in social communication — for example, finding conversation, small talk, or unwritten social rules confusing or draining.
  • A strong preference for routine and predictability, and distress when plans change unexpectedly.
  • Intense, focused interests.
  • Differences in sensory experiences — heightened or reduced sensitivity to sound, light, texture, smell, or crowds.
  • Exhaustion after social situations, or after masking traits to fit in.

These characteristics exist in the general population to varying degrees. An assessment helps clarify whether a person's profile is consistent with autism and what support may help.

Why does Adult Autism occur?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference with a strong genetic and biological basis. It is part of how a person's brain develops — it is not caused by parenting style, and it is not caused by vaccines. For many adults, understanding this is an important part of making sense of past experiences.

Diagnosing Adult Autism

A comprehensive adult autism assessment draws on information from several sources. The process may include:

  • Detailed clinical interview: your current experiences, strengths, and challenges across work, study, relationships, and daily life.
  • Developmental history: information about early childhood — with consent, input from a parent, sibling, or someone who knew you as a child can help, along with school reports where available.
  • Standardised assessment tools: validated questionnaires and structured observation or interview measures.
  • Consideration of co-occurring conditions: autism frequently co-occurs with ADHD, anxiety, and depression, which are considered as part of the assessment.

Assessments are conducted via telehealth, and you will be guided through what to expect beforehand.

Treatments for Adult Autism

Autism is supported rather than "treated". Following an assessment, recommendations are individualised and may include:

  • Feedback explaining the assessment findings.
  • Practical strategies for work, study, home, and relationships.
  • Information to support workplace or study adjustments, and relevant funding where eligible.
  • Referral pathways to psychology or allied health supports, coordinated with your GP.
  • Assessment and management of co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, or depression, where present.
