How telehealth psychology works

  1. 1

    Contact reception

Call reception to discuss availability, the service you are looking for, and any referral or funding requirements.

  2. 2

    Check your funding

For a Medicare rebate on therapy sessions, ask your GP about a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral. NDIS, workers compensation and TAC arrangements need approval first.

  3. 3

    Join your video session

Sessions are held over a secure video platform. You will need a device with a camera and microphone, and a quiet, private space.

  4. 4

    Ongoing support

Dr Syed works with you on goals and next steps. Where you are also seeing one of our psychiatrists, your care can be coordinated within the practice.

Telehealth psychology questions

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist provides psychological assessment and talk-based therapies such as CBT and DBT, and does not prescribe medication. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication and provide medical treatments. At Mindscape, our psychologist and psychiatrists work alongside each other.

Can I claim Medicare for telehealth psychology?

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible individual psychology sessions under the Better Access initiative. A Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP are generally required. ADHD and autism assessment packages are not Medicare-rebatable.

Who can see Dr Syed?

Dr Syed offers therapy for adolescents aged 12 and over and adults, and ADHD and autism assessments for ages 12 and over. Sessions are available in English, Hindi and Urdu.

Is telehealth psychology as private as an in-person session?

Sessions are held over a secure, encrypted video platform with the same confidentiality as an in-person appointment. Choosing a quiet, private space at your end helps too.

Is telehealth psychology suitable in a crisis?

No. Telehealth psychology is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis or at risk of harm, call 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
